Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge

This simple eco-lodge may be no-frills but the stunning location on the edge of Manu Biosphere Reserve and amazing birdlife provide all the frills you need. Add friendly staff and tasty food and you have plenty of reasons for staying here!

Named after Peru’s national bird, the red and black Andean Cock-of-the Rock, or Tunki, this eco-lodge is set in a beautiful protected cloud forest on the border of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. It’s owned by a non-profit conservation group, Peru Verde, and the whole ethos of the lodge is to have minimal impact on the environment while providing welcoming, comfortable accommodation for the guests who come here to witness the incredible birdlife and diverse flora and fauna.

It’s undeniably simple – you sleep in wooden cabins (albeit with their own private bathrooms with a good supply of hot water), but you’re well looked after by the friendly, helpful staff. The wholesome food is tasty and just what you need after an invigorating day walking in the forest. There is no Wi-F and only limited electricity, but that’s all part of the adventure.

The key attraction is the birdlife. The lodge is on the Manu road, which has been called the ‘best birding road in the world’ and each morning and evening male Cock-of-the-Rock birds gather at the nearby lek to perform their elaborate, noisy, courting rituals. At the lodge, bird tables and hummingbird feeders are continually replenished, encouraging a continual stream of feathered visitors, while torrent ducks, the Amazonian umbrellabird, tanagers and toucans can all be seen in the forest. Look for animals such as woolly monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys and spectacled bears– and see how many of the 80 species of orchids you can find.

Times to Go

Birding is at its best from May to October. The very best months for Cock-of-the-Rock mating rituals are September to November, although the males display throughout the year.
