Best time to visit Peru

In general, the best time to visit Peru is the dry season from April to November, with June to September being the most popular months (and therefore the busiest).  In the rainy months of December to March, rain makes travel difficult with roads becoming tricky to navigate, and landslides in the Andes are not uncommon either. The specific destinations of your visit may also impact on when is the best time to go too, so here is a bit more detail.

The Coast

Coastal areas of Peru have a dry, sub-tropical climate. December to March can see temperatures reach up to 30°C. June to September is winter with temperatures dropping to 15°C, and some rain is a possibility, and mist (garua) is likely.

The Andes

The altitude will affect the climate but as a general guide, the rains fall from December to March. For most people, June to September would be some of the best months to visit (though these can therefore be very busy). Days will be mostly sunny and dry though you will need to wrap up in the evenings. Don’t write off April, May, October and November though. The weather can be variable, so it’s best to pack accordingly.

For those travelling specifically for the Inca Trail, please note that this is closed in February. Also, from a conservation point of view, we don’t sell the Inca Trail in January or March either as trekking in these wet months can damage the trail.

The Amazon

Prepare to get hot and sticky, the Amazon is humid all year round and daytime temperatures often reach the mid-30°C. It can rain at any time of year though you will experience less precipitation from May through to October (the dry season) than you will in late November through to April (the wet season). If you are interested in the colourful spectacle of the macaws and parrots at the clay licks, then August to October is the best time to visit. May to October is the best time for rafting the Apurimac River.
